Amos' Birth Story

Well sweet Amos you are a month old already, I guess now is a good time to finally post your birth story.

It was our usual errand running day so Micah and I had ventured out to go grocery shopping and make a few other stops as well. I had been having contractions on and off for a month, so another day of spontaneous contractions didn't seem out of the ordinary by any means. Once back home Micah wanted to blow up balloons for 'baby happy birthday' so we blew up balloons and hung them up. All day Micah had been singing happy birthday to my belly, it was like he knew that it was the day! After setting up the balloons Micah went down for an unusually long nap and only woke up at 5 pm. It gave me ample time to fluff the nest as I had been doing during most of his afternoon naps. After his nap we went to play outside and wait until daddy came home from work so we could eat supper together. Clint got home around 6:30 and I noticed that my sporadic contractions were starting to happen a bit more frequently but weren't terribly strong yet. I didn't want to get my hopes up since I was 13 days early. I messaged my doula to see what she thought about the contractions that I had been having. She told me to drink water and lay down and if they didn't stop that it was likely real labour. So I did just that and by 7 pm I realized that maybe this was the real deal. I started timing the contractions to see how far apart and how long they were, they were coming every 10 minutes and lasted a minute long. So I called my friend who was doing labour pictures for us and my mom and sister so they could watch Micah.

Mom was busy out in the field and said she would be another two hours as she needed to shower and get ready, she didn't seem in a hurry. So I text my sister, 15 minutes later she messaged me back and said, "ok I left work, do I have time to change?"  It made me laugh a bit at the very different responses I got. They ended up coming together, but not before mom called and asked questions like, "should I pack to stay over night?" "should we take separate cars?" It was now around 9 pm and things were clearly moving along and quickly! So my response was "I don't care, just get here!" During that time my friend Pam arrived and started snapping pictures.

We were trying to get Micah down to bed but I think he could tell that something was up. There was no way he was going to be going to bed. He often came beside me during a contraction and would make me laugh, which was funny and annoying at the same time since laughing was very uncomfortable during contractions. He would popping his head between my legs if I was hunched over, or rub my back, or just run around like a crazy man.

Around 10 pm my mom and sister arrived which only hyped Micah up more. My contractions were getting progressively stronger and I was trying to find comfortable positions, leaning over the couch, on the stairs, on the birth ball and in the shower. My doula arrived around 10:30 pm which was great because things were getting more intense. She helped me focus and breath and I was able to feel relaxed and calm. Micah was still running around like a mad man so I asked Erin to take him out for a walk, hoping that would put him to sleep. Once he left my contractions kicked into high gear since I no longer was focusing on Micah. During a contractions I could hear Tarana (my doula) ask Clint to start the car because it was time to go. At the same time my sister called because she was lost and couldn't find our street. Things look much different in the dark than in the day so she got a little turned around. I was mid contraction while this conversation was going on between my mom and her and that was the last thing I wanted to hear! We grabbed our bags and headed outside. Micah still wasn't back and I started to cry because I really wanted to say good bye to him since it would be the last time I would see him before baby was born and I'd have to share my attention between the two. Just as we were about to leave Erin comes running up and I was able to hug my sweet boy before leaving and of course he asked to come with us.

Around 11:45 pm Clint and I left in our vehicle while Pam and Tarana followed behind. It was a very foggy night which was so odd and our wipers were not working great so I just closed my eyes and moaned during contractions while Clint drove. I had this feeling that we would hit a deer since there were always deer on that road, thankfully we did not. We were about half way to the hospital when I said "I feel like I have to poop." (TMI? well it's a birth story so what else would you expect?) He said, "I know what that means." and started speeding up.

We arrived at the teeny tiny hospital at 12:15 am, rang the door bell so we could get in. They answered the door and asked how they could help! I said, "I'm having a baby!" The nurse replied, "Are you supposed to be delivering here?" - let me just say this hospital is one hallway, 8 patient rooms total! and only two nurses on shift at a time. I mean it when I say teeny tiny! -  I said yes and they let us in. They were looking for my paper work but couldn't find it, so I told them that I was two weeks early. Once they knew that, things seemed to move along and I was able to get in the delivery room. My doctor came in to check me and get my IV in since I was positive for strep B. I was 7 cm and things were looking good. They got me ready to get the IV and I started freaking out, I hate needles with all my being. The nurse was concerned I wasn't going to be able go through with a natural, no pain meds birth (they have no pain meds at this hospital) Tarana assured her that I was only freaking out because of the IV and that it had nothing to do with contractions or labour, and she was right! After a few more contractions my doctor broke my water. I knew things would get intense so I wanted to go to the shower for pain relief. I just stuck on the edge of the bed in a very awkward position, which was my most painful contraction. Once it passed I headed to the shower, we got it going and I got in as soon as the water hit my back another contraction came and I started pushing, I'm told there was a bit of panic as they needed to get me out of the shower (teeny tiny hospital = tiny tiny shower) so I could deliver. I got out and was able to get back to the room in time to hunch over the birth ball and be on my knees for my next contraction. During that contraction Amos' head came down and the doctor said "there's the head" to which I replied "no joke!" I heard a few snickers. I pushed with everything I had during that contraction, I knew he was so close! The next urge to push came and I did just that. I could feel his little body slide out and I was so overjoyed that my sweet baby entered the world at 2:10 am.

Clint knew that he needed to tell me the sex of the baby and not that it was a baby, like he did with Micah. So he said "it's a boy" I said "no!" he assured me it was since he had seen him right as I pushed him out. I was so certain that it was going to be a girl but I was so excited to have another boy and a brother for Micah. The doctor passed him through my legs so that I could hold him on my chest and snuggle that sweet fresh babe.

After a few minutes passed and the cord stopped pulsing I was able to cut it. I then passed Amos off to Clint so that I could get up and move off the floor and onto the bed. I stood up and all of the after birth came out and may have made a bit of a mess. Unfortunately, I tore and had to get stitches which is always less than pleasant, I feel queezy just thinking about it. Once I was all doctored up they moved us to our room to rest.

This delivery was so different from Micah's. I am thankful to have had both experiences but feel so empowered being able to allow my body to do what it was made to do with very little medical intervention. I'm am so thankful that we had an amazing doctor who respected our requests and had our well being in his best interest. My doula, she was amazing. I don't know if I could have done it without her. I was able to stay fairly calm and collected and would get me back on track if I started doubting myself.  Clint, of course! He did great and believed in me. He was also very thankful that we had a much different experience this time around.

38 weeks

well little bee you have a few people on the outside that would like to meet you, soon! - big brother asks when you are going to pop out of my belly button and asks if its your happy birthday, everyday - everyday i wonder if today will be the day - i think you are going to be one long baby, tall just like daddy -  we are getting so excited to kiss your cheeks and welcome you here - this week you seem to like orange juice and fruit - everyday momma bounces on her ball so that you will come a wee bit sonner, micah likes bouncing on there too, its a bit tricky since you are taking up most of the space on my lap - i think i might actually get more sleep once you get here, i forgot just how little sleep i can survive on for days on end - we got some clothes. blankets, and diapers out and ready for you this week, so you really can come any time now - great grandma and popeye are leaving soon for a short trip but would like it if you came before they left so they don't miss your big début - hope to see you soon sweet bee we love you and pray for you every day

36 weeks

wow sweet bee you are now 36 old, officially 'full term' which means you can come at any time! - i'd love to have you in my arms sooner rather than later but i know that God has the perfect day for you to come - i've been having contractions on and off for a while now hopefully they are doing something - it's been fun being able to tell exactly what body part is jabbing me here and there, your little knee can pack a punch! - we are getting so excited to kiss your sweet cheeks - daddy tells me at night that he is just can't wait any more -  micah makes sure you come with us in the car when we go places, he doesn't want you left behind! thankfully you are pretty easy to tote around with us - we can't wait to meet you and get to know you - you are so loved and so perfect just the way you are

35 weeks

it's hard to believe that in 5 weeks, give or take,  we will be holding you in our arms. where has the time gone? - the other day i drank a bunch of water and you started squirming around and we could hear the water sloshing around, Micah thought it was pretty funny and is always asking if there is 'waka waka' in there with you - this past week you had momma wondering if you were going to make an early appearance with two straight days of contractions, thankfully you decided to stay in there a little bit longer, probably because you heard your brother throwing a tantrum and decided to stay were it was a bit more peaceful - you sure do love radishes and ice just like your brother did - you get the hiccups several times a day and it's so fun to watch my belly pop up and down and know exactly where your chest is - we sure are wondering what you are going to look like, will you look like your brother or have your very own look? - either way we can't wait to kiss those sweet cheeks and nose - sweet little bee, you are so so loved!

when will bee come? is a bee a boy or girl? how much will bee weigh?

on my heart + lots of pictures

I've been trying to figure out the right time or if there is a right time to get this off my heart. This pregnancy has been so different in so many ways. There are the physical ways it's been different with slightly less morning sickness, totally different cravings, feeling much better over all than I did with Micah. However, this pregnancy has been very different emotionally too. With Micah I was ecstatic, I felt like the whole world should stop moving and acknowledge that I was going to have a baby, a real squirmy squishy baby. With Micah I also had intense, crippling fear of losing him, I couldn't sleep for days on end because of the fear.

This time around I have been surrounded by loss and heartache as this baby grows in my womb. I have had friends loss there littles early on in pregnancy after years of trying, and I have friends who found out that there sweet girl wouldn't live long after she was born. This week we are saying see you later to that sweet girl. My heart is absolutely broken! So many emotions run through my heart and mind. I feel the kicks of our babe and wonder why the Lord has allowed such pain and heartache on our friends. It has been very difficult to have excitement for the life growing inside me and grieve simultaneously for our friends that have lost so much. The guilt is overwhelming.

Rejoice with those who rejoice, and mourn with those who mourn. - Romans 12:15

Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. - Isaiah 41:10

Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light. - Matthew 11:28-30

33 weeks

sweet bee it is so hard to believe that you are 33 weeks old already! time is flying by - you get the hiccups, a lot - big brother loves to kiss you goodnight - he also tries to show you off when we go shopping - he loves putting lotion on my belly that feels like you may rip out of - you really like radishes, just like your brother did - the doctors say you are big, which scares momma just a little bit - you seem to think that mommas ribs is the perfect place to push your sweet bum into - you also like to keep momma nice and toasty warm but the weather is also doing a great job of that too, water, fans, and shade are my friends right now - we might get to see your sweet self in a couple weeks if you don't flip head down, i'd love to see you one last time before we hold you in our arms but also would love if you would go head down sooner than later - oh sweet bee we love you so much and pray for you everyday

micah's birth story

i finally got around to writing micah's birth story. i love reading others birth story and want to share our story with you.

monday march 25 i had, had contractions on and off for several weeks at this point and didn't really think much of it when contractions started at 4:30pm.  i made supper, spicy thai noodles. i was trying to eat as much spicy food, pineapple and raspberry tea as possible to get things going. clint got home an hour later i told him i had a few contractions and we decided to start timing them since they had been happening for over an hour. we had plans to go out for wings night with our small group from church, i wasn’t sure if it was the real deal and i was feeling pretty good so we headed out.

that evening i was pulling out my phone pretty consistently, i hate when people are texting when they are out with friends but my contraction timer was on my phone. while out the girls were asking me what i would do if i went into labour and if i would tell them if i was having contractions. i told them i would, but i never did. we dropped our friends off and got home around 11pm and i tried to go to bed but after an hour of tossing and turning and realizing that sleep wasn’t going to happen i moved to the couch and watched tv and let clint sleep a bit.

tuesday march 26 all night my contractions were consistently 8-9 mins apart. as my contractions started getting a bit more intense i paced the hallway and kitchen and by 4:30am the contractions jumped to 2-3 mins apart. i timed them til 5am and woke clint up telling him we would probably need to leave in the next half hour. i went and made coffee, did the dishes and  put my make up on, called my mom to tell her it was go time. i told her that i didn’t feel like my contractions were very intense but wanted to go in to the hospital since they were close together and we had an hours drive ahead of us.

both clint and i were so calm. we both expected that we would be frantically trying to get out of the house but it was the complete opposite. we were both so relaxed, although i've never seen clint  wake up so quickly. we double checked to make sure we had our bags, camera, car seat and off we went to the hospital at 6am. clint drove the speed limit the whole time we were so calm but so excited that soon we would be holding our sweet baby!

we got to the hospital around 7 am walked in the emergency entrance since the main entrance was still closed, my sweet best friend also met us there. the security guard asked if today was the day and pointed us in the right direction, we knew where we were going if we went in the front entrance but didn't know the way from emergency. we headed down the long hallway to the elevators and up to the third floor. i was so excited at this point. i felt like i'd be holding my baby in a few hours. we filled out the paper work and i hopped up on the bed to be checked out. i was 4 cm dilated and 80% effaced. there was still progress to be made but i was very excited that i was far enough dilated that i got to stay at the hospital. next came the dreaded IV. i didn't handle that so well, closest i've ever come to fainting. the nurse called out we need cranberry juice and a cold face cloth and two seconds later there was a cloth around my neck and a straw shoved in my mouth.

the dr. came in and said i was looking good and but his shift was over so the new doctor would be coming around right away, i asked who it was and it just so happened that it was my doctor who was on shift next! i was very excited because my doctor is fabulous and i was really hoping she would be the one delivering my sweet babe.

we got moved into our room, I didn’t want to sit because on the drive in my contractions had slowed down to 6 mins apart so we started walking the halls. my mom showed up around 9:30 am with my sister and we started crying because we were so excited that this was actually happening! we continued to walk the hall to keep things going.  at 11 am the resident came in and checked me and said that i wasn’t progressing very much and so they wanted to put me in synto drip to get things moving along. i really did not want to do this but they hooked me up so that we could get things moving a bit quicker. i was confined to the bed at this point so i asked for an exercise ball and started doing squats on the bed. within 30 mins the synto was working it magic. my contractions increased in intensity and and length. each contraction lasted two hours with about 30 seconds in between to breath. as time went on the contractions got more intense and the resident came back and said to up my synto drip because i wasn’t progressing enough, talk about discouraged! the nurses looked at her in shock and i said please no! i was curled up in a ball and moaning, my body was unable to get a break since my contractions were lasting two hours. i started crying out of frustration, why weren’t things moving quicker?! after the resident left the nurse checked me and said i was progressing and i was at 6-7 cm and completely effaced and that she wasn’t going to increase my synto drip unless my doctor ordered it. i was so thankful because i wasn’t sure i could handle much more.
clint and my mom were so encouraging through all of it! my mom kept telling me i was beautiful and clint kept telling me i was doing a great job and helped with my breathing.  i had mom on back rubbing duty and clint held my hand and i had to be able to see him at all times.

at around 4 pm they were having a hard time keeping the monitor on micah because the contractions had him moving all over and i was curled up. so the resident came back at 5 pm and hooked up a head monitor to him. i hardly felt human at this point because i had so many wires and tubes connected to so many different places on my body. while the resident was there she asked if i wanted an epidural, i quickly replied no. i heard a quiet gasp sweep the room. after the resident left clint, mom and the nurse all asked why i didn’t want an epidural and they all said that i should get one so that my body could have a break and save some energy for pushing time. the sweet nurse then told me that since this was my first baby that i would probably be pushing for 2-3 hours. i agreed to get an epidural since it looked like it would be several hours of crazy two hour contractions ahead of me.

at around 6 pm my doctor finally came to check me. i asked if i could go off of the synto drip and she said yes. Praise the Lord! i got my epidural and was able to breath for the first time in hours it felt like. however the epidural only took on the right side of my body. the left side was completely unaffected by the epidural so the nurses started rolling me from side to side. this caused micah to get stressed and his heart rate shot up and nurses came rushing in. i became very worried and was hoping this didn’t mean i would have to have a section. once they stopped rolling me around micah’s heart rate went back to normal. a nurse came in to check me i was still at 7cm, ugh! i was hoping i was closer to the end than that! when she checked me micah’s heart rate went shooting up again, the nurses flooded in again, they started rolling me around again. this happened several times and we realized that if my right leg moved at all then micah’s heart rate shot up. i had to lay still, even if my foot moved his heart rate shot up. my doctor came back to check me at around 9 pm and my contractions had slowed down to much so they put me back on synto, i was not pleased but i knew there needed to be an end to this seemingly endless labour.

i felt all the contractions but couldn’t move otherwise micah’s heart rate would shoot up, so i was squeezing clint’s hand a lot. a nurse came in to check me around 11:30 pm and said i was 8cm and that if i felt i needed to push that i shouldn’t because it can cause inflammation and that would make things take longer yet. we were nearing the end and i was getting excited.

wednesday march 27, 1 am i NEEDED to push! clint was so encouraging and helped me with my breathing so that i wouldn’t push. i was so frustrated. i wanted this all to be over and to be holding my baby in my arms. the nurse checked me and said i was 9cm. i so badly wanted her to say i was 10cm but i remembered what she said about pushing early so i tried my hardest not to push. the nurse went and called my doctor and the whole pediatrics crew since little mans heart rate was going crazy. at 1:30 am i got the go ahead to push, and push i did.  i had the nurses voice in the back of my mind telling me that i would push for 2-3 hours since this was my first time. that gave me the drive to get this baby out of my. i pushed with all i had in me, i thought i was going to blow ever blood vessel in my head. the doctor said i was doing great and only a few more pushes. i thought to myself, she’s just saying that. the next push she says, “oh babies hand is by it’s head” i replied, “do i keep pushing?” she never said anything so i kept pushing. next contraction i was given an episiotomy, clint had to hold my leg back from kicking the doctor in the face, OUCH! my mom had to lay down because she got a little light headed. next contraction i gave it everything i had and told the doctor to pull this baby out of me. i pushed one last time at 2:21am and then had the most beautiful baby i had ever seen laying on my chest. i asked clint what it was. he was in shock, his adrenaline had worn off and he turned white and all he said was “whats, what?” the nurses told him to sit. someone told me it was a boy. i cried and couldn’t take my eyes off him.

labour didn’t go anything like i had wanted it to but the end result was getting to hold my sweet baby boy in my arms so it doesn’t really matter.

I'm due!

it is so hard to believe that any day i will be holding my sweet babe in my arms.
the past nine months have been the longest yet shortest nine months of my life. there is such an amazing blessing and journey that is about it begin, and i am so excited. clint and i can not be more excited, anxious, or nervous. we are so excited to find out if our sweet baby is a boy or girl, to learn about our baby, what makes him or her tick, to watch their sweet personality be revealed. we are excited to see what gifts and talents our sweet babe has been blessed with. we are excited to see what our baby will look like, will they look like daddy or momma or a mix of the both of us? the anticipation is killing us! we are so ready to be a sweet family of three. (and i am so done with counting how many new stretch marks i get each day!)

keep an eye out on instagram (amber_enns) and twitter (amberenns) as i will be posting on there about our baby news before i get a chance to on the blog.

moments, joys & worries

it's been a bit quiet around these parts lately. that wasn't my plan.
we have been busy: celebrating birthdays, visiting family and friends before baby arrives, celebrating easter,  doctor appointments, i've been wrapping things up at work and trying to rest and get my swollen feet up.

my hubba hubba husband turned 25 last week. since we've been married he has insisted that our kitchen be adorned with a rooster. every kitchen must have a rooster apparently. these are the things i am learning. so for his birthday i got him his very own kitchen rooster, from here. he has yet to be named.

since this sweet babe in my womb is due to arrive easter weekend we celebrated early with clints family. the kiddos had a blast searching for there treasures. this cute little, creepy guy was in one of the eggs. wind him up and he'll go for dayyyz!

i was a hot mess from tuesday afternoon til thursday morning. i had a doctors appointment and there were a few concerns. my mind was racing imagining ever horrible possibility. after my appointment i went to starbucks, then my mom called me and i was a big ball of tears in the middle of the mall. i cried a lot in those few hours. the uncertainty which lead to worry was eating me up!

thursday morning came and i got to see this sweet face.
huge hot tears steamed down my face as i got to see my sweet baby sucking its thumb, sticking its tongue out at us, and getting to see that little heart beat.
everything was perfect.
there was no reason for worry, it was a false alarm.
praise the Lord.
and those squishy kissy lips.
come. on.
my heart is a puddle!

i was giddy all day after getting to see my healthy babe. i put my feet up and crochet a bit. it's been a long while since i've pulled out my hook and yarn. hopefully i'll get this little cocoon done before baby comes.

later in the eve some friends and i went out for a date.
such fun.
such a blessing!

this was my real life this week.
the everyday moments, joys, and worries.

36 weeks & wishing for spring

let's have a date, a coffee date.

but did you know that i would probably get an iced beverage because i have this really cute built on furnace that is keeping me extra toasty.

did you know that i am ready for spring? i am ready for the snow to be gone, for flowers to start blooming, for the sun to shine, the breeze to be warm. i am ready for puddling jumping, evening walks were i can still feel my legs once i get home.

did you know that my sweet babe is 37 weeks which means full term! i don't think i have been so anxious in my life! i just want to meet this sweet peanut that has taken over my midsection! here are some thoughts about what week 36.

did you know that you can see what people are guessing sweet peanut will be, when the babes birthday will be and how big it will be? you can also make your guesses here there will be a fun prize in it for the winner that guesses the closest!

did you know that i'm getting dreadlocks soon?! my sweet hubs says i'll look like medusa when i'm in labor. he is probably right. i have never been attached to my hair, it's just hair, it will grow back. i have posted about it before >> here.

what about you?!
are you sipping hot coffee/tea or slurping us ice cold lemonade?
is it spring like where you are? i am so jealous if it is!
if you've had a baby were you early, late or on time? did the anticipation kill you like it's killing me?
have you popped over to make your guesses about my sweet little peanut?
are you attached to your hair? would you ever get a drastic do?
